Millennium Seoul Hilton

As you may have read, I spent a couple of days in Seoul, South Korea, recently.

The hotel of my choice was the ‘Millennium Seoul Hilton’, recommended by friends as well as good reviews on various forums.

A couple of days prior to my arrival I sent an eMail to the hotel to ask for an early checkin. Our flight arrived at 06:30 in the morning and the typical checkin time at hotels is 02:00 p.m. A couple of hours later I got the confirmation eMail. Wow, nice. Thank you.

Indeed, we arrived at 08:30 a.m. at the hotel and everything was prepared.

I found my room reasonable spacious and the bed was heavenly comfortable and large.

This a huge rotating tree.

The Hotel offers two Executive Lounges with soft drinks during the day and  Evening Cocktails.

HHonors Diamond members  are offered the choice for breakfast in the Lounge or at the regular breakfast restaurant. We choose the restaurant and it was a good choice. Plenty of cold and warm items, live cooking (waffles, eggs, omelettes etc.), healthy juice etc. Awesome.

Every single staff member was extremely friendly and attentive. Bell Boy, checkin staff, Roomservice, restaurant, Concierge. Everyone.

So I felt very comfortable at this hotel. Remember, it is ‘just’ a Hilton, not a Conrad. Crazy in comparison with the Conrad Istanbul.

Dieter

Day trip to Busan and Ulsan

During our recent stay in Seoul we did a side trip to Busan and Ulsan. Knowing that a day trip is way too less to see everyting we still decided to take this opportunity.
We’ve chosen to fly with Air Busan (part or Asiana Airlines) on the route Seoul Gimpo (GMP) – Busan (PUS):
IMG_0551
Main reason for this choice was the combination of ticket fare, schedule, nice destination and a good connection to another airport for our way back to Seoul.
Air Busan is part of Asiana Airlines (a Star Alliance Member) but does not allow mileage earning with Lufthansa Miles & More or BMI Diamond Club. The GMP airport is more a regional airport and can be reached within 20 minutes by train from downtown Seoul Station.
Aircraft was HL7232, one of the 3 Boeing 737-500 from Air Busan. Unfortunately no online checkin, but I got a seat in Row 10, still an exit row with just 2 seats with slightly more legroom. But seating was comfortable.
For the 3 hours in Busan we decided to give the local Aquarium a visit.
From Busan to Ulsan we took the KoRail train KTX 148 for 8100 Won (equals approx 5,50€ or $7.00).
IMG_0555
As both airports are far from the city centers we took a taxi from PUS to Busan and a public bus in Ulsan (Bus 5003, 3200 Won) from the KoRail station to the airport. Actually this was a nice sightseeing ride through Ulsan. They even have a McDonald’s there :-) Unfortunately we could not convince the bus driver to stop a minute as I haven’t been to a McDonald’s in Korea…..ok, just kidding (re the bus driver).

The flight back from Ulsan (USN) to Gimpo was with Asiana Airlines with the Boeing 737-400  HL7511. Had a seat in row 6 which was very uncomfortable due to restricted legroom. But I earned 750 Status and Award Miles with Lufthansa Miles & More.

All in all it was a nice excursion trip with a whole bunch of new impressions. It was worth it.

Hilton ParkSA Istanbul

During my recent trip to Istanbul I also had a stay at the Hilton ParkSA Istanbul. It was the New Year’s Eve night and one day after my stay at the Conrad.

Main reasons for hotel hopping were Rates and exploring different properties.

There’s no subway or bus station nearby so we took a taxi from the Conrad to the ParkSA. To get into downtown Istanbul we took a Taxi to the tram station Kabatash. It’s a 5 minutes ride for about 10 Turkish Lira. One also can take the cable car to Taksim and connect to the metro.

Checkin was easy and friendly, our rooms were ready.

This hotel does not really honor the HHonors Diamond status as I did not get any room upgrade nor any welcome letter or similar. But we’re allowed to have breakfast at the restaurant (as there was no breakfast in the Executive Lounge on January 01).

My room was very basic and had an extremely small ‘Queen’ size bed. Well, I know that 95% of all Hilton properties give a s*** about their apparently most loyal guests.

The Executive Lounge was nice, however. And the staff was outstanding attentive.

Here some pics, more can be found in my travel photo gallery

There are two more Hilton properties in Istanbul. A DoubleTree and another Hilton. Especially the DT looks very nice. Will try to stay there on my next trip to Istanbul.

Airport Hotel Astana

During a recent side trip to Kazakhstan we decided to stay overnight in Astana as our flight back left at 05:00 a.m. As the city of Astana is approx one hour from TSE Airport we looked for something in the airport’s vicinity. After a short research on Astana’s Airport website we found a link to an Airport hotel. Actually to two hotels.

So we choose the cheaper one outside the terminal – its just a 5 minutes walk. A double room was availabe for 9400 Tenge per 24h (~50€).

We got a room with two sinlge beds. Beds were small but considering the situation comfortable enough.

As there’s no restaurant we bought some drinks and food at a kiosk at the airport. The airport itself does have a restaurant which was closed.

Everybody we had contact with was very friendly, even when it was difficult to talk.

Dieter

Conrad Istanbul

A couple of days ago I stayed for one night at the Hilton family hotel Conrad in Istanbul. Until then I stayed only at two other Conrad hotels: Singapore and Tokyo. As I absolutely love the Conrad Singapore, my expectations prior to the arrival at the Conrad Istanbul were very high.

Unfortunately my expectations were way too high. I would rather see this property as a Hilton Garden Inn or at best a regular Hilton. Just my personal opinion based on the impression I got during checkin, Executive Lounge, Room and Breakfast.

The Lounge is relatively small for this huge hotel, it was in the evening and for breakfast difficult to get seats for three people. Breakfast was limited and hot items like scrambled eggs or sausages always empty.

Being only a Hilton HHonors Diamond guest I got as most times no room upgrade other than a small room in the Executive Floor. Compared to the regular room of friends of mine I could not figure out any difference.

Even during checkout I’d to debate about getting an invoice for my prepaid room charges.

Here some pictures:

I always thought that the different little Bears I got in Singapore and Tokyo are kind of a gift representing the Conrad brand. I do not expect something nor am I dependent on some freebees but I’ll never forget the link between the bears and the corresponding hotels.

It’s not a hotel to return soon.

I am looking forward to my stay at the Conrad Singapore next week.

Dieter

My first flight with Air Astana (KC)

Today was my first flight with Air Astana: KC 851 ALA-TSE.

Our inbound flight with Turkish Airlines from Istanbul arrived at approx 05:20 so we’d almost 4h to wait at the Almaty Airport. Immigration was fast and easy and navigating through the airport was easy as well. All important information can be found in English. We managed to get Tenge from the ATM to buy some water and for other expenses.
We used online checkin yesterday for our flight 851 but still went to the checkin counter to get printed boarding passes. Everybody was very friendly and we’d no issue communicating in English.

Airplane was the Airbus A319 P4-YAS with comfortable seats. 3 rows 2-2 business seats (similar to U.S. Domestic First) and 3-3 in Economy. Seat pitch was ok and there are also movable headrests.

Due to low visibility (125 instead of the minimum 150) we were delayed approx 50 mins. Everything was communicated clearly and we even got a drink in Economy during the wait.

Inflight we got a delicious warm sandwich as well as Coca-Cola family soft drinks.

Arrived 45 mins late in Astana.

My summary: another nice airline where even some well-established airlines could learn from.

Dieter

Just in case you want to get additional news while I’m on tour you might want to follow me on Twitter. I try to use #TTADR.
Thank you!

Btw….I’m currently using BlogPress for iPad. So far I’ve no clue why the blog posts appear in such a strange format. It also crashes when I try to save a post… Tips appreciated.

Different carry-on baggage allowance policies

I recently flew out of London City Airport (LCY) and noticed the following sign about carry-on baggage policies of the airlines serving LCY:

Quiet impressive to see such big differences, especially concerning the weight. BA allows 23 kg whereas Lufthansa/Swiss allows only 8 kg. Given, that all airlines use only regional jets like Canadair or Embraer at this airport.

Dieter
