DoubleTree by Hilton Las Vegas Airport

I had a couple of stays recently at the DoubleTree by Hilton Las Vegas Airport. The hotel itself is nothing special, just a standard DoubleTree. Reasonable rooms, free parking and free WiFi. Hilton HHonors Diamond members do get a complimentary full breakfast in the restaurant.

DTLAS

There’s an Applebee’s next door.

Hotel offers a complimentary bus shuttle to the airport, currently leaving 24h every half hour. Signing up for the way to the airport is highly recommended.

As I had very early flights out of LAS airport, I returned my rental cars the evening before at the Rental Car Center. Bus shuttles are running between the Rental Car Center and the airport’s terminals but there’s no direct link between the Rental Car Center and the DoubleTree. It’s a 30 minutes walk between both locations.

There’s also a public bus route 217 which serves both, the Rental Car Center and a stop next to the DoubleTree. The stop is Warm Springs / Puritan. Fare is $2.00 and you’ll need to have either coins or two 1 Dollar bills. Takes approx 10 minutes.

Dieter

Conrad Seoul

As mentioned in my last blog post I had a weekend stay in Seoul in December and decided to try the brand new Conrad hotel which opened in mid November. As I am a big fan of the Conrad brand it took just a few seconds to decide where to stay. So I booked one night using Points and Cash for a standard room. I was really looking forward to this trip. So was Conrad Bear, my travel companion :-) He hoped to get a new playfellow at this Conrad hotel.
A couple of days prior to my arrival I sent an email to the Conrad Seoul begging for an early check-in, as my flight from London Heathrow arrives at approx 9 a.m. Hiltons do typically not allow an early check-in so it is a hit and miss with various properties. That’s what I like while being a InterContinental Hotel Group Royal Ambassador. Staying at an IC, early check-in as well as late check-out are guaranteed benefits. Way to go, Hilton HHonors! That would be a really good enhancement for Hilton HHonors Diamond members. Luckily the Conrad Seoul answered and promised to try to provide a room as early as possible.
Was at the hotel at approx 11:30 a.m. and indeed, they let had a room ready for me. Nice. Thank you, Conrad Seoul!
From the airport to the Conrad, which is located in Seoul’s financial district, there are several options (time and KRW provided by hotel information brochure):

  • Subway: 55 min for 3.750 KRW
  • Hotel Limousine: 50 min for 120.000 KRW
  • Taxi: 50 min for 60.000 KRW
  • Airport Bus: 90 min for 15.000 KRW

I took the subway:

  1. Korail Airport Railroad at Incheon International Airport station
  2. Transfer to Subway line 5 at Gongdeok Station
  3. Get off at Yeouido station which provides direct access to Conrad Seoul (Exit #3)

At Yeouido station I found it a bit difficult to find the right way to the hotel entrance but I finally managed to get there.
The check-in area looks a bit strange and does not look like a hotel lobby, if you ask me. Just a couple of check-in counters. No seating or lounge area. Or did I miss something? Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture.
Check-in process was very friendly and efficient. What I was missing was a short introduction to the hotels’s facilities or services (will come to this point when I write about the InterContinental London Westminster).
I went to my room on the 34th floor. My plan for the day was to take a shower after the long travel, relax a bit and take a spa treatment.
Here some pictures of my room:

There was someone waiting for us :-)
Conrad was happy about it. So far he only got an Elephant at the Conrad Bangkok and a small (and not really cozy) bear from the Conrad Tokyo. Nothing in Istanbul and Hong Kong.

Well, a lot of construction to be completed in the area.
As it was still a couple of minutes earlier than noon, I went upstairs to the Executive Lounge for a very short breakfast. Wow. The lounge is awesome! And staff was very attentive and friendly.
Later in the afternoon I went to the SPA floor and asked for an appointment. Luckily I just had to wait less than five minutes to get an available slot and I relaxed during a 90 minutes treatment.
Next morning I had to be at the Incheon airport early so I was the first guest in the lounge. There’s a buffet style breakfast with hot items and you can even get cooked to order eggs. Unfortunately HHonors Gold or Diamond members do not get the opportunity to take the (free) breakfast in the regular restaurant.
Check-out was again friendly and I took the subway back to the airport.

The Conrad Singapore is still my favorite hotel but frankly with just a narrow margin. I really like the location in Singapore and the hotel lobby, of course. Really enjoy sitting there in the evening listening to live piano/vocal music. That’s what I am missing in Seoul. Rooms are similar in my opinion. Comparing the Executive Lounges, the winner is definitely Seoul. Breakfast in Singapore is my favorite as it is allowed to use both restaurants (and the Executive Lounge, too). But there needs to be a difference between the properties, no question!

Edit (03.01.):
Just got a nice eMail from the GM of the Conrad Seoul. „We actually have the option for our Executive Floor guests to choose to have their breakfast in our lounge on level 37 or at our restaurant Zest on level 2″. Thank you!

Dieter

A weekend trip with British Airways to Seoul (ICN)

Starting December 2nd 2012, British Airways introduced a service from London Heathrow to Seoul Incheon Airport in South Korea with a Boeing 777. To celebrate this, BA offered some reasonable fares in World Traveler Plus and Club World for a limited time. I took advantage of this offer and booked via my favorite travel agency a return trip in Club World. Seoul is always worth a trip. Some 25 fellow Flyertalker were also on board my flight date. Approximately 80 FTer flew this route during the promo time. Some even made it on the inauguration flight.

I was to leave Munich on a Friday morning and returning Sunday late evening. So I had just one night in Seoul. Have been four times so far in Seoul this year, making ICN one of my most used Asian region airport. Which hotel should I choose this time? Again the Hilton Millennium where we had an awesome stay earlier in January? It happened that a new Hilton Family hotel opened in mid November: the Conrad Seoul. As I am a big fan of the Conrad brand it took just a few seconds to decide where to stay. Conrad it is. So I booked one night using Points and Cash. I was really looking forward to this trip. So was Conrad Bear, my travel companion :-) He hoped to get a new playfellow at this Conrad hotel.

Friday morning, 05:00 a.m. My alarm clock told me to get up. One hour later I took a cab to the airport as my flight to London departed at 07:45. Unfortunately, that’s one of my most used flights ever. BA 947 MUC-LHR.

As always Check-in at the BA counter in Terminal 1B was fast and easy. So was the passport and security control. I headed into the British Airways Galleries Lounge for a very short breakfast, The variety of food items is very limited however I appreciate that there is a lounge at all!

The flight was on time and service was lovely as always, even in Economy this time. At London Heathrow Terminal 5 I had as always go through an additional security inspection. Still no clue why BAA built this Terminal in that way, that everyone from a connecting flight has to go again through security. Mad if you bought liquids in the departure area of your originating airport….

After a second breakfast in the BA First Galleries Lounge I went to the departure gate. Boarding started and I made myself comfortable in my seat.

IMG_2131

IMG_2132

I did not eat anything during the short flight to ICN so I cannot comment on the service or food. I spent the time on board reading a thrilling book (in German): “Der Buddha, Geoff und ich”.

Unfortunately I was not really in a good mood that weekend so I did not join the group of Flyertalker.

Immigration after our on time arrival was fast as always and just a few minutes later I sat in the commuter train to Seoul Station and to the Conrad hotel (see next blog post).

Sunday flight back home was without any issues. Well, at check-in I was asked if I am willing to either upgrade into First class using Avios or accept a downgrade into World Traveler (=Economy) for a compensation of GBP200. Not a good deal so I politely denied.

It was a nice weekend escape! Thank you BA for the nice fare.

Dieter

Hilton Promotion for Q1/2013: Double Your HHonors

Hilton just announced its first quarter 2013 promotion. You can get either double points or double miles for your stay at participating properties.

image

Actually, the promotion is not covering the whole first quarter in 2013 – it starts January 7th. And once you select double points or double miles you cannot change it after registration, so think first.

And you do need to register in advance.

Frequently asked questions can be found here.

As always there are several properties which do not participate in this promo, so be careful while booking these locations! The full list can be found here.

Irrops handling by American Airlines–a very positive experience

Most of the time you only read about negative experiences with something in the internet. Especially when it comes to travel related frustrating situations like oversold flights, delays and cancellations. I know, I am not an exception. It is way easier to complain (also to get rid of the frustration) as to honor a good experience.

So now it’s time for a laudable report about my recent incident with American Airlines.

Actually, I was booked on 3 flights on November, 26th 2012 with American Airlines:

  1. AA 162 HNL-LAX 13:30 21:00 First Boeing 757-200 N194AA
  2. AA 010 LAX-JFK 21:30 05:45+1 First
  3. AA 655 JFK-STT 08:10 13:15 Business

Check-in, boarding and take-off at Honolulu Airport was as usual, nothing notable. We left the gate on time and service started soon. Looked like a smooth flight.

Suddenly after approximately 1:30 inflight, the pilot made an announcement which led to this blog post: we need to turn around and fly back to HNL airport. Something with the air condition does not work and this is a safety issue he cannot ignore. And as the distance to Honolulu airport unfortunately is shorter than to Los Angeles we really need to fly back. I guess you can somewhat imagine, how enthusiastic the passengers on this fully booked flight were about this change in their travel plans. But safety first, of course.

I do not fly much, but I had never to turn back to my origin airport. And as I had no urge to be as quick as possible in STT I decided to stay calm and let things go as they go. One of the many purposes of this trip was to get more experience with the oneworld Alliance, mainly with British Airways and American Airlines. I was just curious about how AA deals with this issue. I have had only a few severe delays until now (less than 1% of my flights) with Lufthansa, United Airlines and US Airways. So I sat back and relaxed. Could not change it anyways.

The pilot announced that his plan was to get the air con controller repaired in HNL and then continue our flight to LAX as soon as possible. It was a Los Angeles based flight crew so I guess they also wanted to spend the night at home by their loved ones.

The crew continued the inflight service as best as possible. First class was served with drinks and a delicious salad. We reached the gate at Honolulu at approximately 17:00. Maintenance crew was already waiting for us. Cockpit crew kept us informed about the progress with several announcements during the ground time. Ground staff brought bottled water for the Economy cabin. Just a few passengers tried to get out of the plane to either be rebooked or to cancel the trip. As far as I could see, cabin crew and gate agents did their best to accommodate these passengers, even when one or two did not stay calm and tried to vent. But overall, everybody really stayed relaxed. During the time on ground about 8-10 people left the plane and to families boarded new.

During the wait I checked my record locator for this trip as well as other options to fly to STT just to be prepared for the worst. But I did not ask anyone to rebook me. I was really surprised that my Amadeus booking changed every couple of minutes and I saw that I got booked onto several flight routes out of HNL and LAX as a precaution. Routings included i.e. HNL-DFW-MIA-STT or HNL-LAX-MIA-STT, HNL-LAX-DFW-MIA-STT and so on. It’s not easy to get rebooked with such a short notice, especially in first/business class. Most of my recent domestic flights were fully booked and AA also upgrades it’s top tier guests in advance. So if you want to book/rebook it’s difficult to get a seat. Frankly, even as a HON Circle Member with Lufthansa, I have never seen something similar. Never got automagically rebooked onto different flights. Always had to be active from my side to get on another flight. But, as I mentioned already, luckily I did not have many situations.

Luckily the maintenance crew was finally able to fix the issue and we left the gate again at 19:05 with destination Los Angeles. Service continued where it was stopped so we got a hot meal. Liked it. Shortly before landing the flight attendant made an announcement that there will be American Airlines agents at the gate in LAX to help us with our onward journey. I was curious about the procedure.

We arrived at Los Angeles International Airport at 02:05 in the morning of November 27th. My next possible connection was at 08:00 to DFW so I already prepared myself for some hours at a gate at the airport. Had a flight cancellation with British Airways in London Heathrow recently and it took my 2 hours (!) to get a hotel voucher and being rebooked onto a next day’s flight. I had that in mind plus boarding at 07:30 and security check etc. So this meant approx 2-3h in a hotel to be paid by me? No way.

To my big surprise there was really a team of agents at the gate waiting for us. Thumbs up! As I was one of the first passengers to leave the plane I just walked to the counter and asked if they have information about my onward journey. I got an envelope handed over to me containing three boarding passes, a hotel voucher for the Holiday Inn LAX and a $7 breakfast voucher. Wow. Everything was already prepared and no need to discuss anything. I also saw that there was a large stack of AA envelopes for most/all other passengers. As I travel with carry on bags only I went straight to the ground transportation area just to literally bump into the Holiday Inn shuttle bus. What a timing! Was in my hotel room 20 minutes after arriving at the gate! Wow. Couldn’t been any faster at all. So I got 3 hours of sleep and a shower.

My onward journey was smooth without any further issues.

Thank you, American Airlines!

I know, this might be an exception, as the gate agents had approximately 4-5 hours to prepare the rebooking for all of us. And I guess, my next irrops with AA won’t be that well prepared. However I really liked the way how AA cared. And also a big thank you to the Crew of American Airlines flight #AA162. They also had a long day to work and remained very friendly all time.

See you soon on another American Airlines flight.

Regards,
Dieter

Doubletree by Hilton London Westminster

I am somewhat frequently in London and I always try to explore new hotels. As I am still loyal to the Hilton Group I try to choose different Hilton family properties.

Last week I had the chance to get a reasonable rate at the Doubletree by Hilton London Westminster. This hotels was part of the former MINT group which was merged with Hilton last year IIRC.

Hotel entrance and lobby look very new and modern. I had a really friendly check in experience, got the hotel’s services explained as well as the HHonors benefits. Really friendly – what a great first impression.

Went to my room and was surprised. Let the pictures speak:

IMG_2022

Unfortunately the large king size bed consists of two single mattresses :( A bit uncomfortable due to the gap.

IMG_2023IMG_2024IMG_2025

Very modern furniture and interior. Everything in working order. Haven’t had such a nice room lately.

IMG_2026IMG_2027IMG_2028IMG_2029IMG_2030IMG_2031

Bathroom is a bit small, but ok.

IMG_2032IMG_2033

All rooms have an iMac computer to watch TV, entertainment program and to access the internet. Free WiFi was also available throughout the hotel.

IMG_2034IMG_2035

As in most Doubletrees I got my cookie during check in:

IMG_2037IMG_2038

2 free bottles of water in my room.

IMG_2036

Hilton HHonors Gold and Diamond members get the same benefits as explained on the welcome letter. So this property does not make a difference between Gold and Diamond. Not nice but that seems to be the trend for most Hilton properties anyways. As you can buy HHonors Gold for just 48€ a year or even less, almost everyone is a Gold member nowadays. And even Diamond status can be reached without staying often in Hilton hotels. For me a valid reason to change my loyalty.

I enjoyed the free full breakfast in the restaurant and like to highlight again the friendly staff. I really felt welcome in this hotel.

To summarize, I really like this hotel. Could become my No 1 favorite in London, winning over the Hilton London Olympia. The only downside is the bed. Will try a queen size room next time.

Regards,
Dieter

British Airways Business Class (Upper Deck)

Recently I had the opportunity to fly with British Airways in Business Class on a Boeing 747-400. BA uses a 747 in a 52 or 70 Business Class (Club World) seat configuration and also offers 14 seats in First Class. Compared to Lufthansa, where the 8 First Class seats are located in the upper deck, British Airways has its First Class in the nose of the airplane and. Therefore there are 20 Club World seats in the upper deck. This makes the upper decks seats kind of exclusive as it is typically very quiet. You can reserve a seat in advance there typically only as a British Airways Executive Club Gold member or by paying a higher seat allocation fee. So chances are sometimes good for me to catch my preferred seat. Of course not always, but sometimes. While others prefer other seats (especially in Row 62), I like seat 64A.

IMG_1932

This is seat 64A.

IMG_1934

There’s no difference in the seats between main deck and upper deck, just the seat layout is adjusted to the cabin size.

IMG_1935

Right and left are seats 62A and 62K (exit row)

IMG_1936

The footstool can be released and turns the seat into a flat bed as soon as it is in bed position. Really comfortable. I’ve spend dozens of hours in Lufthansa’s Business Class seat (the old one) and I really really like the comfort and privacy of BA’s Club World seats. And especially compared to the new Business Class seat of Lufthansa. I do not like to always bump with my knees into my seat neighbor while sleeping  and share a very limited foot space. I also do not feel cramped in an way while sleeping. A very big advantage compared to Lufthansa’s new Business Class.

BA’s seat layout has always one seat forward facing and the adjacent seat rear facing. If traveling with your partner, you can talk to him/her easily without always turning your heads towards each other. Seems to be comfortable.

If traveling with a stranger, you can use the privacy screen using a touch-button at the top of the privacy screen to move it discretely up and down. You can see the screen lowered in picture 1 and this picture shows the privacy screen in use:

IMG_2070

So there’s no need to look at your seat neighbor.

I really like the storage compartments between the seat and the windows so there’s plenty of personal space.

IMG_1937

The the background you can see a baby bassinet.

IMG_1938

There’s also a laptop locker as a drawer. Above the drawer is a power socket to fit European and US plugs (not the large UK ones). Seats in a Boeing 777 also feature an USB port to charge your mobile device.

IMG_2069[1]

The fold-out table can easily adjusted into various positions and allows comfortable dining and working if necessary. It can be moved into a rear position where even I can get out of my seat without paying attention to the things on the table. And it can be folded so you have even more space while still having a base for your iPad etc. Really thought-out.

Inflight entertainment offers plenty of new releases and old classics as well as plenty of music. You can also create your own playlist. It also features special entertainment for kids under 12 and some games. And a moving map, of course.

British Airways will allow to use the IFE during take-off and landing as of December with only a few restrictions (TV screens in Club World and Business may not be extended and you may not use own headsets). More details to come.

I cannot judge food quality/quantity as I did not eat anything on my recent flights in Club World. But I’ll write about that, soon.

Regards,
Dieter

Aenderungen bei der Lufthansa Miles und More Kreditkarte

Bei der Lufthansa Miles&More Kreditkarte gibt es zwei Änderungen:

  2. Ab dem 01. Januar 2013 verdoppeln sich die Gebühren für die Nutzung des Überweisungsservice von derzeit 1,25% auf 2,50%:

Hilton London Olympia – Part 3

Earlier this year I reported about the changes at the Hilton London Olympia Hotel. With the new Executive Lounge they cut the benefit for HHonors Gold and Diamond Guest with a full breakfast.

This week I again stayed one night at the Olympia Hotel and was really surprised to learn about their recent policy change. The hotel now allows Gold and Diamond members to enjoy a full breakfast in the restaurant or in the lounge.

Pretty good move!

Dieter
