Petronas Twin Towers

Earlier in 2011 I was for the first time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Two reasons for that trip: reasonable cheap ticket and I wanted to see the Petronas Twin Towers :-) Unfortunately I had only 2 days there on a Sunday and Monday. As always I did not prepare myself enough so I went to the ticket booth on Sunday at approx 10 a.m. just to realize, that all tickets for that day were sold out. They only sell about 1200 tickets per day for 50 RM (equals ~13€ or ~$16). And the Towers are closed on Mondays. So no Towers for me on that trip…..I needed to come back!

2012 05 Kuala Lumpur 014

So again I bought a ticket to KUL, this time arriving Saturday evening and leaving Monday evening. Also I prepared better and knew that I’d to be at the ticket booth no later than 7 a.m. – it opens at 8:30 but I’d to expect long queues.

Well, I arrived at the tiekct booth at 10 minutes to 7 in the morning just to find out that there’s already a long queue.

2012 05 Kuala Lumpur 017

Unfortunately, there’s currently no way to buy tickets online or anywhere else. So I’d to wait….and enough time to watch the others. I quickly learned that there must be some kind of ticket mafia, because people wanted to buy 20-30 tickets. At approx 8 a.m. a lady from the ticket office went along the queue and asked everyone how many tickets they want. She tracked the total and handed everyone a number card. I was number 62. People at the end of the queue were sent home because they’d no real chance to get a ticket.

A couple of minutes after 9 I finally got my ticket!

2012 05 Kuala Lumpur 056

The 2 p.m. time slot was perfect as I was able to get back to the Doubletree for brakfast.

Here just a few photos from the Skybridge visitor tour:

2012 05 Kuala Lumpur 020

There’s a bridge on floor 41 and 42 between the two Twin Towers. Level 41 is for visitors and 42 for employees and residents.

There’s a beautiful view. After a couple of minutes to enjoy the stunning view we were lifted to floor 86 to enjoy a even better view.

Summary: It was worth the money and time to enjoy this spectacular building and view. You can see more photos in my SkyDrive photo library.

Dieter

Singapore Airlines flight SQ 21 EWR – SIN (Newark to Singapore)

Similar to the British Airways flight BA 1, SQ 21 is one of the ’special‘ flights on my list.

Here’s why:

  • it is the longest commercial flight with a scheduled flight time of 18:40h – actual flight time depends on wind conditions, of course. Distance is approximately 10000 miles (converts to 16000 km). Based on the inflight flight statistics our flight was around 10200 miles in distance.
  • it is an all-Business Class flight with 100 seats 1-2-1, operated by an Airbus A340-500
  • it is Singapore Airlines – never had a chance to fly SQ before
  • due to the lenght it is a challenge – both physical and mental
  • it is one of the few flights which arrives +2. That’s arriving 2 days after departure due to time zones and flight duration and schedule (will cover why this was most important to me in another post)

In preparation for this flight I was able to select my prefered meal online, as mentioned in this post.

As I had an inbound flight with United Express I had to change terminals in Newark and used this opportunity to stop by the Singapore Airlines check in counter to get a SQ-branded boarding pass (which was a good decission, as it turned out later).

TSA security control was easy but with the new x-ray scanner. Stil unsure, if I like this….
SQ departs from Terminal B. The official Lounge for this flight is the Scandinavian Airlines Lounge. Could also have used Lufthansa’s Lounge next door but I wanted to stay in the SAS-Lounge. Unfortunately, there are now showers in any of the two lounges. That’s a bit sad, as SQ 21 leaves at 23:00 in the evening after a probably long (business) day and arrives at approx 06:00 in the morning in Singapore, at the beginning of a new long (business) day. And guess what? There’s no lounge with showers either in Singapore which can be used with an inbound flight. Luckily I do have a Priority Pass and there’s the „Ambassador Transit Lounge“ in Terminal 2 with basic showers.
Boarding started on time and they did want to see an original SQ boarding pass. Tried it with my printed by United boarding pass but was declined. Strange. Can’t they imagine that there are connecting passengers with no original SQ boarding pass? Hm.
Was the second pax to board. This was my first impression:
The seat itself is very comfortable as a seat. It measures 30 inches in width. Really liked it. And the leather is comfy, too. Seat pitch is not that much.
What I did not like is the bed. The seat can easily be turned into a fully lie flat bed but it is way too short for me. I’d say, bed length is about 1,80m – similar to British Airways seat in the A318. And, even more uncomfortable, I’d to lie with angled legs and foot space is very limited. Unfortunately, I did not take pictures of that :-( I know, I’m too tall for a frequent flyer and Singapore Airlines is an Asian airline….
Seat features power and iPod connectifity.
Cup holders.
Nice 20″ entertainment system with top movies – even in German language!
We were ony 30 Passengers on board. That’s sad as SQ does probably not really earn money with this flight. On the other hand I am wondering why they do not open award space for this flight. It was really difficult to find an available seat and it was more than luck that I got this seat on this very special date!
There are no real amenity kits available for this long flight, but shaving kit or toothbrush are available at the lavatory. Well, the lavatory is _very_ small. It was a real hassle to change clothes.
We only got a pouch with slippers and a separate eyeshade. But that’s typically Singapore Airlines. Nothing secial related to this flight.
About half an hour after take off service started with drinks (fortunately Coca-Cola brand) and the first meal service started soon with a thuna salad followed the main course.
I pre-ordered „Pan-fried fillet of beef in three peppercorn sauce with garden vegetables and roasted potatoes“.
It was delicios!
And an ice cream as a dessert.
During the long flight there was serverd another hot meal on request:
Approximately one hour prior to arrival in Singapore we got a breakfast. I pre-ordered eggs sunny side up with sausages and hash browns.
As a summary, it was a nice flight, big adventure and experience. Thought, it would be more comfortable.
Here’s a picture of the acutal flown flight path:

More technical details on this flight can be found in Wikipedia. Our flight took 18:50 hours and was 10350 miles long.

Dieter

Flying Cessna with Cape Air

Cape Air (IATA Code 9K) is a regional carrier with a main hub in Boston (BOS). They also serve destinations within the Caribbean and other routes within the continental U.S.

I have already flown 3 legs with them and blogged about it (in German). Cape Air operates Cessna 402C aircrafts with up to nine passengers. Sometimes you can occupy the Co-Pilot’s seat as typically there’s no second Pilot. Unfortunately I am too tall for that seat.

For today I had choosen to fly 4 legs (as mentioned in other posts, I am still trying to write about the story of the whole trip). I stayed 2 nights in Saranac Lake, NY in the Adirondacks. I like this area because it is so scenic. I already did 2 scenic flights in the past, one out of Lake Placid (LKP, host of the Winter Olympics 1932 & 1980) and one with a sea plane out of Long Lake. Saranac Lake has it’s own Airport: SLK – Adirondack Regional Airport. Cape Air has 3 daily flights to Boson from SLK. So I decided to fly SLK-BOS-SLK. Weather permitting, this could be a really scenic flight! I also added on a separate ticket BOS-AUG-BOS on the same day. AUG is Augusta, ME. Also a nice scenic route along the coast.

SLK-BOS departs at 06:30 in the morning. Set my alarm to 5 a.m. and was about 6 a.m. at the terminal. Well, it’s a tiny building with just 1 check in counter, a TSA security control station and a waiting area. There’s even a Hertz rental car counter (which was not staffed at this time). Check in was friendly but in my case took a while as there was a computer issue while trying to enter my birthday into the system. Booked that ticket through a German flight booking site and they did not ask for the Secure Flight data. Well, that was the main reason why our flight was delayed by about 15 minutes.

Unfortunately it was very cloudy on the whole trip to Boston so no scenic view. Well, could have been worse. In Boston I went straight to the ladies at the Cape Air Gate C27 – there’s only one gate and one counter for all 9K flights at Boston airport. Ask them to check me in for my flight to Augusta and back. They couldn’t really believe that I was just flying for the purpose of flying and sight seeing :-) We had some fun talking about it. Thank you!

During the flight to AUG weather cleared a bit and also on the way back it was a really nice view. The most funny part however was, that I was the only passenger on the flight BOS-AUG! That was kind of a private flight. Enjoyed it. Had approx 20 minutes turnaround time at AUG and the gate agent already welcomed me very friendly and laughing while handing me my boarding pass for the return flight. I stayed in the waiting room for some minutes and we were 5 passengers on the return flight.

After arrival in Boston I went again to the same ladies at the gate counter to say hi and ask for my boarding pass back to Saranac Lake. Was allowed to take an earlier flight. Again, thank you, Cape Air.

Arrived back in SLK on time with a stunning view during the flight. It was worth the trip as the Adirondacks are that beautiful!

As metioned, it was a fun trip and I enjoyed it.

Regards,

Dieter

British Airways Flight BA 1 LCY – JFK

There are a couple of ’special‘ flights I always wanted to take. You probably only understand why if you’re into (air) traveling like me.

One of the flights is British Airways Flight 1 from London City Airport (LCY) to New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK). Main reasons for selecting this flights are:

  • Aircraft type is Airbus A318 which is typically not used for long-haul flights
  • it has only 8 rows 2-2 Business Class only seats, so maximum 32 passengers on this flight
  • one of the largest aircrafts to land and start at London’s small City Airport LCY
  • it arrives in JFK as a domestic flight due to United States Customs and Immigration preclearance at Shannon Airport (SNN), Ireland. The stop itself is necessary because the A318 needs to be refueled as it cannot start in LCY with full tanks (weight!) due to the short runway. And to make the stop more efficient and comfortable BA offers (read: requires) preclearance.
  • This flight is my first (but not last) long-haul flight with British Airways.

The planning for this trip started several month ago. I will probably blog about the planning process separately.

The current trip started today morning at 04:15 a.m. at the Novotel Hotel Munich Airport. Took the bus 635 at 04:56 en route to the Airport Terminal 2. After check in I stopped by the Lufthansa First Class Lounge for my traditional Bavarian Weisswurst breakfast. Driver picked me up at 06:10 to bring me to the remote position for my flight LH 2490 to LCY, leaving MUC at 06:30. Today operated by Augsburg Airways with the Dash 8-400 D-ADHR. Left MUC and reached LCY both on time. I was a bit concerned about this flight the days before because yesterday was one of the in the meantime many days with strikes from the union Verdi. Really annoying if you ask me but that’s how it is. Arrived in London two hours later at 07:40 a.m. Fortunately there was no queue at UK Immigration so I was ‚landside‘ just a couple of minutes after deboarding. That’s a big advantage in flying into LCY compared to London Heathrow (LHR). As BA 1 departs at 13:00, I did have enough time. Went straight to the British Airways check in counters to ask if I already can check in for my flight – which was not a problem. Got my boarding pass with a smile. Used the airport’s left luggage facilities to store my bags (GBP 5 per day and piece) and went into the city.

I was back at the airport at around noon. Security check was fast and I went straight to Gate 24, where BA 1 as well as BA 3 departs. BA 3 is the same flight just a couple of hours later. As LCY is a small airport, there’s not really a Lounge. But BA ‚transformed‘ the gate area into a small lounge serving some snacks and basic drinks. That’s perfect and enough.

Boarding the aircraft G-EUNA (the plane’s registration) started at approx 12:30. As this flight is also called ‚banker shuttle‘ I was surprised to see just a few business-like dressed passengers. Boarding was completed at 12:40 and our take off was on time.

When I first entered the plane as the first of us passengers I was really surprised. Had seen a lot of pictures but seeing and feeling it live is a different story. Amazing. Selected seat 07K during the online check in yesterday as I like to sit always on the north side of a plane (so I usually can have the shades open to look out of the windows – without beeing dazzled by the sun). Today’s flight had only a few empty seats and luckily 07H – the seat next to me – remained empty. Good fortune for my first BA long-haul flight :-) Could start a rant about Lufthansa now….

Shortly after take off we were served drinks and an appetizer. We could choose from:
  • Thinly sliced salted beef with capers and herb mustard dressing
  • Pea and majoram tart with cracked pepper and pineapple chutney

One hour later at 14:07 we reached our Gate at Shannon Airport (SNN). We had to disembark and take all our belongings with us. First step at SNN was a security check, required by U.S. security regulations. Afterwards there are a couple of immigration desks (7 were staffed for us approx 25 pax). The CBP officer was friendly (well, did I already mention that I did not had any bad or negative situation during my 40+ U.S. immigrations?). Preclearance was done within minutes. Next step: waiting in the gate area (did forget to take a picture).

Boarding for the second leg started a couple of minutes later and was done quickly, of course. Take off was at approx 14:40. Again very shortly after take off we again were served drinks and a salad.

For the main course we had a choice of:
  • Grilled filet of beef with wild mushroom mash and herb butter
  • Baked halibut with laver bread crust, saffron mashed potatoes and creamy dill sauce
  • Roasted corn-fed breast of chicken with creamed sweetcorn and bacon, buttered cabbage ad roasted new potatoes
  • Wellington filled with spiced lentils, flat mushroom and aspargus
  • London City Ploughman’s

For dessert:

  • Rhubarb fool with white chocolate drum and redcurrant dressing
  • Caerphilly and Cashel Blue cheese with Bath Oliver biscuit, spelt crackers and quince jelly

Had the filet of beef and the Rhubarb fool – both delicios!

The Business Class seat is really very comfortable, even for me. Well, if I need to compare it with Lufthansa’s seats, I’d tent to more like the new First Class seat. I know, it’s my own taste.

It can recline to fully flat bed. It also features 2 universal power outlets per seat! Regarding the bed….well, it is very comfortable and I managed to sleep for an hour. But it is only approx 1.80m, so I could not stretch my legs :-(

For inflight entertainment you can get an iPad (for the geeks: it’s an iPad 1) loaded with a bunch of movies, TV shows and games. I like this concept as it is way more flexible than the build-in systems. Like car GPS systems.

Apparently there is also the OnAir mobile phone system onboard which should allow text messages and data services – no voice (which is great!). Unfortunately neither my German Vodafone nor my T-Mobile UK or Truphone SIM card where able to connect. No clue why but I survived this short flight without beeing connected….

Approximately one hour before landing we got another drinks and sandwiches.

Arrived at JFK Terminal 7 ~40 minutes ahead of schedule. As it was a domestic flight I was just a couple of minutes later at AVIS to pick up my rental car.
Written on my iPad with a bluetooth keyboard using the App „Blogsy“ during the flight. If you find typos please keep them ;-) And bear in mind – I am not a native speaker. Hmmm – I could write an article about my travel technology
Regards,
Dieter

Singapore Airlines flight SQ 21 Pre-order Meal service

A couple of days ago I wrote about the pre-order meal service from Thai Airways.

In the next weeks I am also scheduled to fly with Singapore Airlines flight SQ 21 from Newark, NJ to Singapore. Actually, this is the longest commercial flight with 18:50 hours flight time. EgyptAir’s Alioth Lounge Cairo Airport

Just a short photo report about one of the EgyptAir Lounges at CAI Airport. Today I was escorted into the Alioth Lounge.

IMG_0755

Very friendly staff! Food assortment is ok. Comparable with i.e. a Lufthansa Senator Lounge. Restrooms are inside but I did not see and showers.

From the windows you do have a nice view to the odd F Gates. Lufthansa/Swiss usually depart from Gates F1-3 (on the left side of the above photo).

Novotel Cairo Airport

I have stayed in this Hotel 3-4 times in the past 1,5 years. So my review is based on the experience of all stays – pictures are from today.
The Hotel is adjacent to the Cairo International Airport and within a somewhat secure area surrounding the Airport. There’s supposed to be a shuttle bus to collect guests from the terminals. Honestly, that’s the only really bad thing about this hotel :-( Shuttle _from_ the Airport to the hotel never worked even after a specific appointment. I gave up this time after waiting for 60 Minutes and took a taxi for 30 EGP (~3,80€) for the 4 minutes ride. Yes, I schould’ve known better…
Hotel entrance is secured, similar to the airports. The Hotel staff treated me always friendly, especially in the restaurants.
Hotel is cheap, nothing really to write home about. Old and worn. But it’s proximity to the airport can be a big benefit. And of course it’s ok depending/considering in the rate ;-)
IMG_0742
Entrance and main room. Bathroom is to the left from where I’m standing.
IMG_0743IMG_0744IMG_0745IMG_0746
At least a free bottle of water!
IMG_0747
And this time I even got a plate of fresh fruits….probably due to my high status with Accor.
IMG_0748
I had dinner at the “La Primavera”, Tomato Soup and Pizza Hawaiiana and some drinks for approx 170EGP.
Shuttle Bus to the airport runs every 30 minutes during the day. This direction is reliable and I always had the same friendly driver. He’s a funny guy and loves to tell stories. Yes, he always get’s a decent tip.
There are other Hotels in the airport area, too.

Haven’t been to one of the other hotels yet.

Dieter

Weekend trip across Europe

When a good friend of mine asked me several month ago if I want to join the group for an adventure tour with some not-so-common airlines and destinations I quickly agreed. Sounds like fun. So we improved the travel details and here’s the result:

One weekend. 2643 miles flown, 6 flights, 6 tickets, 6 new airlines, 5 different airports, 4 new airports, 4 countries, 3 travelers, 2 islands, 1 goal.

For me it was w welcome occassion to fly with airlines I’ve never flown before and even never considered to fly with. Like EasyJet. Or Vueling.

The journey details:

MUC-STN EasyJet U2 3078 A319 G-EZDN

As mentioned, it was my first flight with EasyJet, too. Fare was reasonable with approx 49€. Did not purchase Speedy Boarding but got hold of an Exit Row seat. Flight left in MUnich in Terminal 1B so I took advantage of my Priority Pass to visit the Atlantic Lounge in Terminal 1C for some drinks. Lounge is comparable to a typically Lufthansa Business Lounge. So nothing really to write home about. I showed up at the gate approx 20 minutes prior the boarding time to watch the boarding process.  Funny – there was already a long line with passengers. Not crowded, everyone standing in one lane. We had a bus gate and there were two busses running. I was one of the last passengers to enter the first bus – and amongst the first pax to leave the bus ;-)

Seat was comfortable and as the flight was not fully booked the middle seat remained empty. Plenty of legroom. And really nice Flight Attendants. Flight was on time and drinks or a snack could have been purchased. I did not.

I am sure this was not my last flight with EasyJet! Given the reasonable price I got a very good service and value.

STN-SIR Titan Airways ZT 6411 BAE146 G-ZAPK

Titan Airways is a charter Airline on behalf of Snow Jet. The fly to the skiing destinations Chambers and Sion in the Swiss Alps. Similar to EasyJet it was a nice flight. Food and drinks for purchase.

BRN-PMI Sky Work SX 106 DH8 HB-JIK

Sky Work is an Airline based in Berne, Switzerland and serves several destinations. Was a very early flight at 06:45. We stayed overnight at the ‘Hotel City’ next to Berne Central Station and we took a bus from there to the Airport.

As breakfast we got two Croissants and some fruits as well as soft drinks. Sky Work even hands out iPads to watch some movies or play some games. Nice. And that’s kind of a low cost airline. Good job.

IMG_0726

PMI-BCN Vueling VY 3923 A320 EC-FOY

Well, Vueling is the only airline during the weekend which I’ll not choose again. Seat in row 4 was extremely narrow and I did have real trouble to sit due to my legs and me beeing too tall….fortunately the middle seat remained empty. No clue what I would have done if not. Probably left the plane and stayed in Palma de Mallorca. Terrible if you’re 1,97m tall like me.

IMG_0727

BCN-PMI Air Europa UX 6073 E195 EC-KXD

The Air Europa flight was comfortable as we got an exit row in the Embraer 195. Plenty of legroom.

It started with a crowded check in. Plenty of package holiday travelers with large and heavy baggage. Sort of fun to watch them repacking their bags :-P Flight itself was ok. Purchased seats oin row 1 for an additional small fee during the booking but it was worth it. Sat in 01C with comfortable legroom. TUIfly served a hot dinner on this 2 hours flight. Just a small plate of noodles with sauce. Could not find any meat in it. But it was ok.

My First Flight with EgyptAir

Today I had my first flight with EGYPTAIR, the national airline of Egypt. Although it was just a short hop from Munich (MUC) to Cairo (CAI) with a Boeing 737-800 (SU-GDE) I really enjoyed flight MS 788 during its nearly 4 hours. In the past, I’ve flown to Cairo with Lufthansa on Boeing 747 from FRA, Swiss on Airbus 340-300 to ZRH and Privatair on a Boeing 737-800 from/to MUC. Lufthansa decided some month ago to downgrade the destination of Cairo to just smaller aircrafts (Airbus 320/321 typically) with the new continental seats (NEK) – which means sitting four hours in a really uncomfortable and narrow seat – even in Business Class. So I decided to try new Airline: EgyptAir (a member of Star Alliance, too).

My seat was 09A, which is the second row in the aircraft and in Business Class (it’s just a two class configuration – which is reasonable for this rout IMHO). There are six rows of Business Class with 2-2 layout and 19 rows in Economy with a 3-3 layout. Business Class seats are comparable with U.S. domestic First Class on most carriers. I like the seat. Plenty of legroom, comfortable seat with personal IFE (20 different movies, 17 audio channels, some games and the air show with flight details).

Boarding was easy and smooth at gate H24. As soon as I sat in my seat I got an Amenity Kit, Headset, a pre-flight drink and the necessary immigration card for Egypt.

Kind and attentive Flight Attendants, btw. Luckily the seat next to me remaind empty. As soon as we reached cruising altitude meal service started. We had a choice of Vegetarian, Chicken or Beef. Yes, that’s three different main courses. Salmon, Salad, Cheese and Bred, too. And a delicious desert. Yummy! EgyptAir serves Pepsi brand soft drinks but that’s fine (well, my personal preference is the Coca Cola brand….).

We arrived just a couple of minutes late, no problem. Immigration was easy as always.

Will now try to fly with MS on a long-haul route, too.

According to the inflight magazin, EgyptAir’s fleet consists of 79 aircrafts serving 78 destinations in 53 countries.

Regards,
Dieter
